Unfortunately, we are suspending the Children’s Marine Biology Program, Touch Tank, and Research Lab indefinitely. We thank you all for your support and while we currently do not have any plans to reopen, we do hope that someday we will. Welcome to Cedar Island Marina Research Laboratory!

Marine Biology Education Program

Cedar Island Marina Research Laboratory, a private marine research lab founded by Cedar Island Marina, Inc. in 1988, addresses marine issues in Clinton Harbor and the remainder of Long Island Sound. We regularly perform research studies including water quality, aquaculture, finfish, invertebrate and invasive species ecology. Specific study organisms include, but are not limited to: the Northern Star Coral (Astrangia poculata), Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus), Asian Shore Crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus), Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) and Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus).

We have been recognized not only for our scientific research at conferences around the country but also for our environmental education programs, which have reached over 55,000 children and adults. We offer both Guided Field Explorations at Hammonasset State Park and Traveling Touch Tanks where we bring Long Island Sound to you!

Cedar Island Marina Research Laboratory has collaborated, and authored studies, with organizations such as the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Aquaculture, National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Connecticut Department of Environmental and Energy Protection, Southern Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut Sea Grant, as well as many other public and private entities.

2022 Marine Biology Summer Program

Hello, parents and caregivers of young aspiring Marine Biologists!

Since the end of our summer sessions in 2021, we have received many, many, many inquiries as to our plans for a Marine Biology Summer Program in 2022. Cedar Island Marina Research Lab is indeed planning to run programming sessions for the 2022 summer season!

In the past, our dates and registration have been made available in mid-February. This season, however, some of our experienced staff members are moving on to big new ventures. We are trying our best to plan ahead in order to give time off for those who have shorter endeavors and find suitable biologists to serve as replacements for others. We hope to have those dates available for registration in the first week of March.

Cedar Island Marina Research Lab is in search of passionate individuals, undergraduates in the field of biology who would be interested in part-time work with our educational program. If you are interested in joining our small team with a great passion for teaching biological sciences, send a short email and resume to our laboratory director Tia’.

Questions? Feel free to email us at CIMresearchlab@gmail.com Current hours of operation are Mondays & Wednesdays 8 am- 4 pm, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 12 pm - 4 pm.

See you this summer!

The animals in Long Island Sound are here to stay all year round, and so are we! Our team has been working hard to reflect over the past summer and prepare for the next one. We are happy to annouce our Marine Biology Summer Program dates for 2018! Although last year's experiences with our programs will be difficult to top, we added some new components for participants to look forward to! We will be taking a closer look into the seaweed species of Long Island Sound, believe it or not, they are quite beautiful! We will also be continuing with our biodiversity studies that participants will help with!

Check out our page here for information on dates, prices, and more!

    See you this season!
